Nerdi

An iPhone app that serves a few real research papers a day: original abstracts, no AI summaries.

  • ios
  • openalex
  • in-app subscriptions

architecture

  1. OpenAlex
  2. Daily selection
  3. Nerdi iPhone app
  4. On-device library
  5. Nerdi Plus sync

Problem

Keeping up with research is hard, and most paper apps replace the abstract with a generated summary. I wanted something smaller: a handful of real papers each day, exactly as their authors described them.

Approach

Nerdi pulls papers from OpenAlex across twelve fields and shows each one with its real title, authors and original abstract, plus a link to the source, usually the PDF. It works without an account: saved papers and reading progress stay on the device. An optional Nerdi Plus subscription adds cross-device sync and an unlimited library.

What I learned

Shipping is its own skill. App Store review, subscriptions, and privacy and support pages are as much a part of the product as the reading screen.
